"Dreams" holds a special place in Kurosawa's body of work. It was his first film in 45 years for which he was the sole author of the screenplay, making it an incredibly intimate project. The director had kept a dream journal, inspired by the practice of the great Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky, and it was these nighttime visions that he meticulously translated to the screen. However, bringing these images to life was no easy feat. The film's $12 million budget was about three times more than the average Japanese feature film of the time, and Kurosawa struggled to find funding within Japan. Studios were hesitant to back a project that tackled sensitive subjects like nuclear power and environmental destruction. Ultimately, it was the intervention of Steven Spielberg, a great admirer of Kurosawa, that secured a deal with Warner Bros., allowing the masterpiece to be made. The film was chosen to open the 1990 Cannes Film Festival, an honor befitting the epic and intimate story it had to tell.
