The captives, including the refugees from earlier, are tied together and forced on a long march through the jungle. As they approach the Mayan city, they pass through deforested lands, failed maize crops, and villages decimated by disease. They also encounter a little girl infected with the plague who prophesies the end of the Mayan world. Once in the city, the female captives are sold into slavery, while the males are taken to the top of a step pyramid for sacrifice. Two captives are sacrificed, their hearts torn from their chests. As Jaguar Paw is laid on the altar, a solar eclipse occurs, which the high priest takes as an omen that the gods are satisfied. The remaining captives are spared and taken by the raiders to be used as target practice.
